She Can't Read...

...but apparently she can write just fine!

Lilo wrote this today completely unprompted by me during her 'you choose' time. I only had to help her to add the 'a's on the ends of Hana & Montana. She sounded it all out completely by herself and even wrote the capital letters! I think reading is just around the corner somehow :D

Actually to say she can't read is not accurate really - she can, sort of. She can sound out completely phonic words and today read 'grown-ups' in the context of learning that 'ow' says 'oh!' She is doing fine, but I don't think she has realised until this week that she can read and that writing is within her grasp too - she was pretty chuffed with this little sentence!

DD made a leap today too - he redid a puzzle from a couple of days ago, only this time entirely unassisted. 40 pieces - all by himself!! It took him about 30 minutes and he stuck at it until it was done - major, major progress!!!

Week 2 in Review

It's been busy again - exhausting in parts and bitty in others, but overall I am pleased with what we are achieving. I find we are all running out of impetus by Thursday and tbh today has not been as good as I had it in my head to be, with only about half the work being completed, but it still felt like a reasonably good day all the same.
The pictures tell the story in a much less boring way than all my words, so enjoy - and I'll add tit-bits here and there :D

MONDAY
Art - painting the bas-relief creations from last week

even for Stitch !

Typing - (everyone does this at some point in the week)

Maths - all at different levels, but Lilo's is most photo-worthy :D
Minnie is doing English is this shot too.

Nature study - this is the view from the school room window and provides many moments of Tot-School conversations about cows and birds :D

Creative Play (Playdoh) - for all the smalls (what school would be complete without the stuff - and ours is all brand spanking new this week - first new stuff we've had in years!!). Here they are all making in Monsters :D

here's Lilo's;

(which of course then led to some pretend play for a little while :D)

TUESDAY.

Craft - Lilo chose to make this little keyring, from a kit she earned at conference this year that had been waiting for the right moment :D With only a little help, she did a great job

Sports / team play - of a sort!!

DT - bridge building (DD was doing this too, but missed the photo)
PE - the walk to Drama takes about 20 minutes :D -
currently the highlight of the week for the middle four.

followed up with races in the park...

and Lilo FINALLY learning how to swing herself -
and then not knowing how to stop again (lol)!

some more nature study/photography (for me this time) -
there seems to be lots of these about atm.

and then for them as we discussed the changing seasons on the way home.

and looked at seeds...

...and berries.

WEDNESDAY
Group play & DT- the day got off to a pretty late start due to some elaborate games with this track that Bugs was sent to 'quickly' build to keep DD & Stitch happy! In the end everyone played for quite some time!!

Craft/DT- Later on Taz spent too much time making this, but I was impressed with his patience and effort, so I left him too it - plenty of hours in his life to do boring school work, not so many to play with Airfix model kits!! :D He took the photo too - so he could use just a little more time!

Problem solving/Thinking skills - DD got busy with his Tweenie puzzles, loved doing them and didn't argue with me that they were "too hard!" - he just did them - so that's progress! Look how pleased he was with himself - he even asked me to take a picture of him with them all done :D
Lilo was on the floor doing her alphabet initial-sounds-match frieze activity, with the 'help' of Stitch!

We did do other 'stuff' on Wednesday too, I just didn't take pictures! When Paul came home DD & Stitch disappeared into the kitchen with him and I think he let them 'help' cook tea - which was taco's, chile and salad - yum!

THURSDAY.

Maths - I gave these home-made pattern strips to Lilo together with some wooden blocks...

.... she understood it no trouble :D
Lilo is a very visual person and it was no surprise to me that she easily converted 2D to 3D and understood the patterning. Looks like I need to think of some more of these - she really enjoyed them. Next thing is to get her to show DD how they work :D

Another of the major achievements I sadly have not photographed this week, is that Lilo learnt to write her full length christian name completely independently - quite an achievement seeing as this time last year she only knew her shortened name and didn't believe her full one actually was her name! Next target is to get her to write all her names - she often doesn't even remember what her middle name is most of the time!!

DD too has been working hard on his name and is beginning to understand pencil grip and letter direction already. He is doing really well with it and I reckon might manage it solo (i.e. not traced) in about another week or so :D Currently he is writing on a sheet of laminate over a lined dry-wipe board on which I have written his name. I give him a 'blob' on each letter from which he knows he has to start and then verbally tell him which way to go ; "around, up, down to the line and flick - that's 'a' ", "start at the top, on the blob, go all the way down to the line, then back up a little, JUST to the dotty line, around and close - good - that's 'b' " - etc... This verbal method is the way I have taught them all to write and they all have very legible handwriting - so far :D The closed laminate tracing is a new idea and it seems to be working well atm. DD is the first child I have had to come out of playgroup still unable to write his name though. It's not that he doesn't have the pencil control, or that he's not bright, I just think everyone's focus has been more on getting him talking clearly than on reading & writing - still is really, but I think he will be so proud when he can write his own name! :D

On the reading front with Lilo I have put her back to the start with Headsprout ( I remember I had to do that for TweetiePie too) as she just was not remembering anything, but meanwhile I have shown her the Starfall 'learn to read' program - and printed out the worksheets - and it is really working for her!! She is getting it AND she is enjoying it. So, I'll go with her flow while it's fun and see where we end up :D I think it will suddenly click (I think I can already see the penny beginning to drop) and she will fly - she's that kind of kid. And when she has it sorted, I will be redundant - she will read and read and read and I will never be able to get her to come and do anything else! She will loose herself so completely in her stories that all else will be a nuisance to her - I can see it coming because that's how she is already, only the stories at the moment come from a conglomerate of sources; her head, things we've read and things she watches. When it's books they will take over her world - I just feel it in my bones!! :D

Other activities have played a role in our week - like Ed City and Moshi Monsters (which I highly recommend as an educational tool!), reading, writing - all the normal, boring stuff. Even when the children play trains for large portions of the day I still feel like we are achieving more than ever before! Bugs is learning a Shakespear sonnet (wow) to recite to the 'class' next week, we have done astronomy, Taz & Bugs played Jenga this morning too, which then morphed into an elaborate game of armies at DD's choosing and lasted some time (missed getting a shot of that one though); there's photography happening here, there and everywhere and Bugs' photo-blog is beginning to look significantly less neglected :D. They are playing together with the littler ones much better than they used to too, probably due to it being an expectation that they do so at various points in each day - to get down to a younger level and play whatever that child wishes is a challenge that it so good for them all, but especially Taz.

Other things of note this week: Minnie and Tweetie-Pie both passed to the next level in swimming - AT LAST! - and Tweetie also found out she did well and got a B for her Primary Ballet exam. I think the examiner might have been quite hard this time though, as none of the class got an A, which is quite unusual at this level, and Tweetie got a lower mark than when Minnie did the same exam, although I know she is much more graceful and co-ordinated than Minnie was at that time.

That's about it for now I think..!

New Tools for Smalls!

I woke up to the sound of noisy dinn this morning. That never bodes well for me and put me instantly into an "I can't deal with this today!" kind of mood, so to avoid monstrous levels of confrontation I hid as much as I could all day! Of course I was physically present, but I think the kids knew all too well that in mind I was 'not in'! Despite that they seemed to have a relatively OK day. I had planned their boxes back on Saturday, so despite not having filled them last night (in favour of watching a film with Paul) they were able to quickly stock them up from my list and carry on with school.
Later in the day some more of my order of new resources for my under 5's came - bearing in mind that I will not likely be sending NJ to playgroup unless I learn to drive, I thought I'd better get sorted with him. I must confess some of the inspiration for this bean-baggy order came from Carisa over 1+1+1=1. So here are some photos from today and yesterday & my 'tot-tray' shelf which I just got organised. Some of NJ's were completely self-instigated (the dominos), some were him mucking in with CT (finger painting), some were 'tweeked' by him - beads go from threading to pouring! and others he played along with my plan for - well almost!! I've discovered this week he can thread round beads on pipe-cleaners and flat beads on laces, he can colour match red, blue and yellow and he can picture match, with some pretty nice attempts at finding labels for the pictures (I used one lotto board & tiles for this - he loved it).

TRAY-SHELVING

THREADING BEADS ON PIPE-CLEANERS

EXPLORING THE ROLL OF DIFFERENT SHAPED BEADS

COLOUR SORTING (NO PROBLEM MUM!!) - AND NAMING!

BEAD POURING - NOW THAT'S MORE FUN!!

FINGER PAINTING - TIME TO GET MESSY!!

REALLY - MESSY!!

LINE-UP, LINE-UP!!

THREADING BUTTON BEADS ON STRING - EASY!!

(BUT IT DOES TAKE A LITTLE CONCENTRATION ;) )

TIME TO LINE-UP AGAIN - AND THEN STACK BACK UP.

NOW LETS SEE HOW ELSE THEY LINE UP...

NOW FOR THE NEW STUFF - HOW MUDDLED CAN I MAKE THIS!!

NOT SURE WHAT TO DO WITH THESE YET, BUT THEY LOOK LIKE FUN :D

DO YOU LIKE MY SMILE? ;D

Aside from Tot-school, CT has been very keen to 'do school' and his big question atm is "What's that letter?" So I think my alphabet buy will be a big hit with him too. Perhaps even better for him that NJ, but hey-ho - whatever. It seems he already knows 'curly c', 'kicking k', 'o' and 'ex' - so that's a good start considering I've taught him nothing so far! He was also making an attempt to write his name free hand today which is great :D (see pictures). He has also pretty much mastered lacing cards this week. He kept going back to it until he completed his way around one whole picture and despite the frustration of entanglement, he still persisted to the end - major progress :D
Ellie also suprised me today with the way she was able to play with the pattern shapes. She made some lovely pictures with them :D

PATTERN SHAPES AND LACING - YUP SUSSED THAT THEN!

LOOK - I WROTE MY NAME ALL BY MYSELF!!

I have decided to have a quick fly through Jolly Grammar with Phoebe as when going into Year 3 she tell me "I don't know how to write a sentance!" I feel a little paniced!! I'm not really sure this is true, but she obviously is not confident with her writing skills, so we are going to cover some 'ground rules' and then hopefully she will feel better equiped, and after all - I never actually did do JG with her because her reading was so far behind, so I guess there probably might be some gappy holes that need patching :D.
There has been a stack of cartoon drawing going on too - with the purchase of 6 whiteboards. The ones I've posted are JAH's and one is a bit gruesome, but is pretty brilliant all the same. I'll try to get some the others do over the next few days too - they really are pretty cool - even if they do rapidly consume my whiteboard markers!! :D

Time to Blog…

‘Bout time too I hear you say – where have you been? Answer – nowhere really, but I have (re)discovered photography in a big (you may have noticed by recent posts) as is always the way with me, a new love becomes all-absorbing for a while. I’m not planning on this being a fad though, as it’s not the cheapest hobby. That said, once the initial cost of the camera is spent, it’s not that expensive these days of digital photography. The cost of photo-paper is not that high these days (especially if you shop in Aldi), but tbh I don’t print many anyway, so that makes it even cheaper :D

So, what else has been happening here…

Jacob – same old with him. Nothing much changes. He is growing up rapidly and slowly becoming more responsible. Today he walked Caleb to playgroup for me, as I wasn’t feeling very well. It’s nice to have an older child in the house,  but occasionally he does forget that he is the oldest and you wouldn’t know him from his toddler siblings!!! School wise he is doing OK. Plodding on really, not exceptional, not unacceptable. I still feel I am trying to regain time with him, but I fear it is not going to happen and I am going to have to settle with what he is willing to give – which is just about ok! ConquerMaths is going well, but we abandoned Galore Park purely because of the quantity. There was no way he was going to complete that book in a year and he would be working below his capability because of it. CM is a good compromise. It does stretch him and help him to join sections of maths together in a way he hasn’t done before. We both really like it (as much as Jake is ever going to like maths!!). We have added in some ‘real life’ maths books (on The Manor Born’s) recommendation and both boys are doing these a couple of times a week. I think they are great in that they help them to see WHY we need maths at all and how it is useful in the real world. I can always remember thinking that I would never need half the maths I learnt, and tbh I haven’t much, but if someone had given me books like these at least I would have seen the point of it all! As far as literacy goes, Jake is working slowly through SYRWTL English 1 (Galore Park). It is good I think, but none of my children are much enamoured with these books – sadly. So currently i am thinking of enrolling the two boys with Catherine Mooney, not because I have any intention of doing the IGCSE at the end of it, but because the course looks good, it would take some pressure off me and I actually think they might enjoy it more than anything we have done to date. Joel is advanced enough (I think) to cope with it too, so they could do it together and that might be fun for them – I hope!!

Joel – is still at the infuriating, know-it-all, argumentative, too aggressive 10yo phase. I know he will grow out of it, but that doesn’t make it easier just now. Work wise he is doing really well and I don’t have to worry about him there. He is motivated by time and often starts school early in order to get finished before everyone else! Sadly this is not always possible when we are doing ‘together’ stuff in the afternoon – then he gets a bit grumpy! He has started trampolining of Saturday mornings and he is enjoying it very much – and I think he is probably quite good.

Abbie – my beautiful 8yo helper. She is nearly always willing to help out and is a very good girl on the whole: long may it continue :) School wise I never realise how well she is doing until I see what her little friend, who goes to private school and is ‘about average’ there, is doing – she is quite far beyond average then! Ab’s continues to love her ballet and is now dancing in the grade 2 class (not that she took grade 1 exam, but that’s just how it’s worked out atm). She is also doing OK in her swimming and this week passed up to level 7.

Phoebe – now 7 – is still not where I would like her to be school wise. Her maths is coming on nicely now, at last. Over half term and for a couple of weeks after i set her 20 addition and subtraction sums a day, with no total equalling more than 10. She managed to master them to the point of doing 10 addition in 30 seconds and 10 subtraction in a minute. Once she had that down we were able to move on in her maths to addition with ‘borrowing’ (only in our books it’s called regrouping, which is more accurate really) with numbers to 100. That may seem quite a leap, but it’s been fine and the penny seems to have dropped with her. She is still painfully slow, but she does ‘get it’! On the literacy side, her reading is making slow, but steady progress, but is still not ‘fun’ for he I don’t think. And her writing is neat enough, very legible, but she struggles to put it together and word retrieval is a problem too, just as it was/is for Jake.

Ellie – does school when she feels like it! Well that’s how it seems anyhow, but all the same she is on episode twelve of Headsprout and is beginning to be able to read. She has at last mastered he numbers 1-10 with no further teaching from me and is now well on her way to mastering 11-20 (reading and writing) with, again, very little effort on my part. I leave her alone for the best part and she comes when she is in the mood. She is really the victim of my being a bit stretched, but all the same she is learning and is probably on a par with others her age I’d say. I’m happy with where she is at and who she is. I actually really like the autonomy of learning that she is getting by default and it suits her, so I may stick with it – even if they others do moan a little that “Ellie never does any school”. They are getting used to it though and they can see that she is, it’s just different to theirs. Often I spend snippets of time with her on weekends and ‘out of school’ times – just ten minutes here and there – and that seems to be enough. She sits in on ‘together’ stuff when she chooses to and seems to absorb from that too.  Much of the time though she is playing some fairy tale out in her mind and is very involved in her play. She loves to ‘read’ books and the other day I heard her reading a Clarice Bean book to herself. She had obviously memorised the gist of the story, which was basically Clarice seeking out some peace and quiet, and was using her own words to tell it. At that moment I wished I’d had a dictaphone. The language she was using was colourful, well developed, well structured and full of voices and characters. I think one day, if I manage not to crush that creative flow in her, she might write books. She has beautiful way with words and an astonishing understanding of context for a 5yo. I feel like I really need to keep my ‘hands off’’ this one and see what she becomes…

Caleb – currently has an obsession with numbers and can count to 13 quite well :) His pencil co-ordination is very good and he can copy letters and numbers free-hand quite legibly. He is keen to ‘do school’ and so has his own school carry-box with a few pre-school workbooks in which he loves to do, albeit for only about 10 minutes at a time. He seems bright enough and his speech is developing well at last. His new phrase tonight was '”that’s different!” :D

Nathanael – is my lovable, mischief that only toddlehood brings to a house :D I love this age sooooo much. He is my  funny, charming, caring, naughty, and extremely quick show-off. Every day seems to bring a new word to his speech. Ok, so I can understand him and you may not, but he has a lot of words all the same. He copies EVERYTHING and learns very fast. He is persistent in his learning too. Up until now books have never interested him very much, but the other night I decided to read him ‘Dear Zoo’ – it became an instant favourite: being taken to bed and carried in the pushchair to playgroup. He practiced those animal sounds/actions for a week and then he had them all sorted. New favourite of the week - ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ – you should hear him trying to count the fruit!! Very sweet. So just now books are very much his thing and that makes me happy, especially as he is no longer trying to destroy them, but actually enjoying learning from them. And new trick of the week – emptying – OH NO!! – clean nappy box, wet wipes, page-a-day loose page desk calendar (hmmm – Jake was not impressed!), drinks bottle bag… It’s not that bad, just a bit of a pain!

So, what else is there to tell…

Last weekend was Mother’s Day of course, so for my treat Paul decided we would take a day in The Lakes (my favourite place in all the world) and do a family hike. So on Saturday, we left at 8.30 and arrived in Grasmere just after 11am. By the time we had all been to the loo and had a snack before we started it was about 11.45. Our walk for the day was to climb Raven’s Crag, across to Megs Gill and down, but we seemed to miss the short path down, so we followed the cairns and ended up going  the long way, over Silver Howe (395m/1296ft) and back into the village. About 4.5 miles I’d say and they all walked the whole way!! You can see a map of our walk HERE, the obvious green line and then right a bit over the ridge (not down into Waithwaite). It was a fabulous day. The walk took us a bit over 4 hours, but the sun shone and the kids enjoyed it – on the whole. There were waterfalls and streams for them to play in, which they always love. I’d hoped the waterfalls at the top would be spectacular, but we didn’t even find them. It actually all seemed pretty dry. As we drove through we noticed that even the river running through Ambleside was very dry. That said, we didn’t look very hard at the top because it was VERY windy up there and the kids just wanted to get down again!!

I’ll post some pictures over on Picasa – follow the usual album link :)

I think that just about get’s us up to date. One and  a bit weeks to the Easter hols – woo hoo – I need a break, my enthusiasm is waning and my printer is complaining!!
